Building a Foundation
R.C. Mathews Contractor was founded in 1941 in Nashville by R.C. (Bob) Mathews, Sr. He drew from his experience in building railroad bridges to quickly become the contractor of choice for Nashville's largest building projects, including Third National Bank headquarters, Genesco and National Life.
Creating New Traditions
R.C. (Bob) Mathews, Jr., joined the company in 1951 and has been a prominent figure in the construction industry since. Under his direction, R.C. Mathews Contractor achieved a reputation as a progressive builder and a renovator of historic landmarks. His commitment to excellence is evidenced in the Nashville area through his involvement in a host of landmark projects, including MetroCenter, One Nashville Place, Grassmere Business Park, Commerce Center and historic Second Avenue renovations.
Our Vision
The third generation of the Mathews family continues the tradition with Walker and Bert Mathews, joining the firm in 1983. Even today the company's focus has remained: to provide clients with exceptional quality, timely completions and dependability.
Walker graduated from Princeton University, received his master's degree from Stanford University and holds a Professional Engineering License. He is very active in the Nashville community, having served in leadership positions for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and The Salvation Army.
Walker has expanded the company into areas of educational, hotel, health care, church, industrial and multifamily construction. R.C. Mathews Contractor also continues to focus on landmark renovation projects such as the Ryman Auditorium, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and The Hermitage Hotel. The company was recognized with Eagle Awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors for the renovation of the Frist Center and the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Today R.C. Mathews Contractor continues to provide exceptional services to a wide variety of repeat clients, including Belmont University, Gaylord Entertainment Corporation and Regions Bank.
Bert is now president of The Mathews Company and a partner at NAI Nashville.
