R. C. Mathews Contractor and Belmont University Celebrate Opening of New Wedgewood Academic Center
Center to house multiple colleges, labs, chapel, offices, and conference space
Nashville, TN (August 17, 2014) - R. C. Mathews Contractor is proud to announce the completion of Belmont University's largest campus building to date, the Wedgewood Academic Center. After 27 months of construction, Belmont University held a Grand Opening Ceremony for the 186,000 square foot structure plus 159,500 square feet of underground parking located on the corner of Wedgewood and 15th Avenues.
Designed by Earl Swensson Associates (ESa), the total cost for the building is $78.4 million, bringing the University's total investment in construction since 2000 to more than $470 million. The building features thirty classrooms that vary in capacity from 24-72 seats and numerous smaller seminar and group study rooms. In addition, there are twenty science labs outfitted with more than $2 million in state-of-the-art equipment.
A main feature of the new academic center is the 300-seat chapel, the first-ever intentionally designed chapel space in the University's 124-year history. The Chapel will host services three times a week during the fall and spring semesters, as well as special services throughout the year. The impressive two-story layout includes arched, double height clear glass windows on the exterior that are mirrored on the interior and a veiled by a layer of art glass. THe space is also equipped with state-of-the-art audio visual capabilities that are fully integrated into the design so that the Chapel can be a multi-functional venue.
As part of Belmont's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the project is seeking LEED-Platinum Certification. The building incorporates a number of green features including multiple green roofs (including one for academic use next to a biology lab), garage recycling room and trash compactor, LED lighting and motion-sensors throughout, a variable flow refrigerant HVAC system, and a cutting edge chilled beam mechanical system in conjunction with a VAV system throughout the building.
