For more than 80 years, R.C. Mathews Contractor has earned a reputation for delivering quality construction across Middle Tennessee. Since our founding in 1941 by R.C. Mathews Sr., the Mathews name has become synonymous with landmark projects, trusted partnerships, and a lasting commitment to Nashville’s growth and community.

1941

The Beginning: R.C. Mathews, Sr.

In 1941, R.C. Mathews, Sr. drew from his experience building railroad bridges to found the business that would quickly become the builder of choice for Nashville’s largest corporations including National Life, Genesco and H.G. Hill.

These landmarks included:

  • National Life & Accident Insurance Company headquarters (1941)
  • Purity Dairies (1947)
  • Green Hills Shopping Center (1961)
  • Ensworth School (1961)
  • Children’s Museum (1966)

1951

Building on Success: R.C. (Bob) Mathews, Jr.

R.C. (Bob) Mathews, Jr. joined his father’s company in 1951 and became a leader in the region’s construction industry. Under his direction, R.C. Mathews Contractor gained a reputation as a pioneer in the design/build concept. He helped many clients such as Aladdin Industries and IBM construct their new headquarters in his master-planned parks called Metropolitan Industrial Park (1966-1970) on Elm Hill Pike and MetroCenter (1970-1980).
His vision for the resurgence of downtown Nashville sparked the development of Second Avenue as a tourist zone and the creation of One Nashville Place (1984).

  • Commerce Center (now Baker Donelson Center, 2001)

1983

Third Generation and Beyond: Walker Mathews, Sr.

Walker Mathews, Sr. joined his father in the business in 1983 after working in Houston and Denver building high-rise office towers. He has broadened the reach of the business as well as continued the tradition of building great buildings and great relationships.

He has successfully completed the historic renovations of:

  • Ryman Auditorium (1994 and 2015)
  • Frist Center for the Visual Arts (2001)
  • Montgomery County Courthouse (2002)
  • Hermitage Hotel (2003)
  • Stahlman Building (2005)

Major Educational projects included:

  • Inman Health Science Center (2006)
  • McWhorter Center for Pharmacy (2010)
  • Janet Ayers Academic Center (2015)
  • R. Milton and Denice Johnson Center (2016)

2019

Fourth Generation: Walker Mathews, Jr.

Walker has over 18 years of industry experience, rooted in hands-on job site knowledge and strengthened by RCMC’s values that have been passed down for generations. As President, Walker leads with a strong focus on company culture, team development, client engagement, and long-term strategy. He plays an active role in project pursuits and fosters deep relationships across the community, always with a forward-looking vision for sustainable growth and operational excellence. Under his leadership, the company remains committed to supporting its people, partners, and the places it builds.

85th Year Anniversary

In 2026, R.C. Mathews Contractor proudly celebrates 85 years of building lasting places and lasting careers. We’ve been a trusted partner in shaping and preserving the spaces that reflect Nashville’s growth and character. Since 1941, and through four generations, our hands and hearts have built the places where we live, work, worship, learn, and thrive. Our tradition of craftsmanship, commitment, and uncompromising excellence has shaped the communities we serve and the people who power our work.
