Project Overview
Completed in 2024, Nashville Christian School’s new gymnasium and event center, known as “The Jake,” includes a 33,500 sq. ft. expansion and renovation of their gymnasium, including an event center and classroom addition that ties multiple buildings together on the school’s campus. Located in the center of the bustling K-12 campus, this new space serves the entire school’s community gathering space. The gymnasium features retractable seating, flexible design, and adaptable storage space that will allow for multiple event configurations throughout the year.
The design phase of this project coincided with the Metro Codes’ adoption of the tornado shelter requirement outlined in the IBC 2018 and ICC 500. Although the original project budget was fixed and could not be exceeded, R.C. Mathews and the design team worked together to integrate the additional costs of the new requirement while value engineering the building to accommodate the change.
